Malcolm Bowman has ADVANCED in these years of plague. He did not DROP! TESTING his prowess regularly, and did not BLUNT his EDGE as he ENGAGED with the fencing community within the Barony.
We will not be FEINT with praise as we celebrate the longest Baronial Rapier Champion!
Therefore we THRUST the Sable Gauntlet upon him.
Baron and Baroness, Declan and Aibhilin of Iron Bog would be REMISE to not LAY ON praises today at Beast of the East, January 7th AS LVII.
Word count 83
Ho! Ha ha! Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha! Thrust! Sproing! BLOG!
I got the chance to write the words to a Baronial Scroll for a friend, which is the best part of being involved in the scroll process!
Knowing that the recipient has many awards and scrolls, I was very confident in choosing a punny tour de force.
I used Fencing Terms to Know, Glossary of Fencing Terms, and called on Baron Declan Gobha for some extra fencing goodness!
Malcolm Bowman has ADVANCED in these years of plague.
Advanced is a homographic or heteronymic pun. The word has the same spelling but more than one meaning: “to move forward on the field of battle” and “to move forward in accomplishments.”
He did not DROP! TESTING his prowess regularly
This recursive pun requires the audience to understand that Drop Testing is a practice unique to the fencing community. Found in the EK- Rapier Glossary, drop testing is the way in which garb is determined appropriate for wearing while fencing.
and did not BLUNT his EDGE as he ENGAGED with the fencing community within the Barony.
Three more homographic puns that, while used close to their actual definitions, are included in the scroll because of their common usage within the fencing milieu.
We will not be FEINT with praise as we celebrate the longest Baronial Rapier Champion!
This is the first homophonic pun. “Faint” and “feint,” with a sort of reference to the phrase “Damning with faint praise.”
Therefore we THRUST the Sable Gauntlet upon him.
Another homographic pun.
Baron and Baroness, Declan and Aibhilin of Iron Bog would be REMISE to not LAY ON praises
“Remise” means “attacking again immediately after the opponent parries an initial attack.” It was a new word for me. Doing these pun scrolls in fields I am not familiar with definitely increases my knowledge of all the aspects of the SCA! It’s also the only other homophonic pun.
Lay On is the last pun I managed to stuff into the scroll. It is used in both Fencing and Heavy list fields.
I had a lot of fun with this. And I hope it sets a tone for the rest of the mundane year: to have as much fun as I can in the SCA as possible.
