This scroll presented a challenge!
Violet, the calligrapher, was working on a scroll blank with illumination by Elspeth Schmalczin von Meittingen that was about the height of a ballpoint pen!
Usually for a Grant award I can go up to 150 or 160 words. For this scroll, I was pretty certain that 100 words would be too much.
I reached out to the contact, Karrah the Mischievous, who had written the recommendation. There were wonderful details of the recipient that simply due to space were not possible to use.
During our conversations it was mentioned that the recipient had an attachment and personal meaning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Infinity Stones.
This, I could work with!
My goal became to mention each of the stones while moving through the scroll organically.
To achieve this most of the adjectives that normally would be included in most poetry or prose style compositions were dropped, which allowed inclusion of several sentences describing and praising the recipients' process.
Then the last two stones were worked in with the date & location and the conclusion sentence.
Being able to work in a meaningful reference to the recipient, the required information, and communicating the weight of a Grant bearing award in under 70 words is a feat!!
My glee can be summed up by Mark Watney, from the Martian, "I get to fly around like Iron Man."
